DMK’s History With Makeup
Make up has been a hobby of mine for many years. In the 1970’s, when “Look-A-Like” contests and shows were popular, I would open my skin revision clinic in Chicago in the evenings and create Marilyn’s, Joan Collins or Clark Gables on people for fun. During this time, I experimented with different mediums and bases, with the aim of achieving remedial effects with clients who suffered from acne or other skin anomalies. I often mixed and matched brands with other ingredients to achieve a natural “skin-like” effect.
I developed my own “bronzer” foundation because I never exposed my face to the sun, advice I always extended to my clients since photo damage is one of the primary causes of premature ageing. However, when it came to recommending a regular make up for my clients, I had nothing to offer them except to offer water based brands or brands that did not involve a lot of mineral oils. Knowing that this was a different kind of business altogether, I put this dream on the back burner for another day.
Well that day has come. Thanks to two of the industry’s greatest minds, makeup chemist Tommy Parsons and cosmetic entrepreneur Brad Look, DMK is in the process of developing their own range. It is amazing what one can achieve when you start with best people in the industry. Tommy has introduced DMK to industry talent such as the chemists who created the formulas for brands such as Cinema Secrets, Joe Blasco and MUDD. I personally was amazed to discover that one of their labs was only a few miles from my house for all these years—the formulators’ behind the legends in my own back yard!
The Best Possible Foundation
I knew that the scientific possibilities of silicone were rich with opportunity. The two most desirable qualities of a perfect make up base are pigmentation for maximum coverage and a natural base that went on like a thin, occlusive film but lasted throughout the day. It also needed to be something that did not INTERFERE WITH ANY SKIN TREATMENT OR PRODUCTS underneath. This way, it would not only be a great boon for wrinkles and other signs of aging, but a wonderful product for acne, port wine stains, scars and the uneven tones suffered by skins prone to pigmentation.
The canvas must be prepared before the paint goes on! A base must not look or feel like anything is there, even in the brightest sunlight.
